My mother’s father signed up for WWII when he was 17 years old, he didn’t die in the war, but he passed away when my mother was a little girl. I was raised to put importance on this day and remembering our veterans.

Please take a couple of minutes today to remember why it is that we enjoy so many freedoms.

I can’t watch this video without crying.

I can’t believe it’s been so long since I’ve blogged. I realized I better post some stuff fast before my Halloween decorating goes to waste!

Social networking is so important for all of us self-employed people but how do you know which sites are worth investing time in?

Well, I can tell you, it really depends on your target market, but I have found certain sites to be a waste of time for me and others have been extremely beneficial.

For me, <a href="http://www.facebook.com"title="Facebook" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.facebook.com');">Facebook hasn’t done too much, probably because I despise the “new” Facebook and don’t want to login. The only time I use it is to update some of my clients’ profiles and add applications and stuff. For me, I signed up long and ever ago with a personal page and have never really used it for business. (Maybe that’s why it hasn’t worked, brainiac.)

MySpace I’ve never gotten into but rumor has it, it’s a waste of time for business networking. (If you have had good results, please comment and let me know about it!)

Now, Twitter. Oh Twitter, how I love thee!

<a href="http://www.twitter.com/jaimeleemann"title="Follow me on Twitter!" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.twitter.com');">Twitter is a social networking site that begs the question, “What are you doing right now?”

You might be thinking, “Well, who cares?”

Answer - You’d be surprised!

Each Twitter post or “Tweet” (hence the catchy name of this post) is like a tiny little blog post. Anyone “following” you will be able to read your Tweet.

To totally get the power of this, let’s talk about me for a minute. I’m a <a href="http://www.mannmadetime.com"title="Mann Made Time" target="_blank" >virtual assistant and I specialize in writing services. When I ‘Tweet’ I try to always let my followers know what it is that I do. But, see, you’re limited to 140 characters with your Tweets so it’s challenging to come up with smart little updates. In the morning, I’ll usually Tweet about what I’m doing (writing a press release, polishing up an article, working on web content, etc.) so that my followers are kind of subliminally getting a service list that’s updated for them each time I’m working on something different. For example, I might say “Drinking coffee and optimizing a press release for web submission.” That tells my followers something personal (I drink way too much coffee because every other Tweet is about my java) and that I have people who pay me to optimize their press releases to be submitted online.

When my followers need my services, if they have been stalking following me for awhile, they are going to feel like they practically know me (Tweeting is a fine balancing act between personal and business for me, but my followers know that I love to cook, eat good food, play with my kids and watch Grey’s Anatomy on top of the fact that I am really busy with writing projects so I must be good, right?).

Twitter, basically, is the ultimate relationship building tool if you ask me. I’ve hired people after following them, I’ve been hired by people who follow me - it’s one big happy Twitter Universe.

I learned about a really cool Twitter tool yesterday called <a href="http://www.twitterbeep.com"title="Like Google Alerts for Twitter" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.twitterbeep.com');">Tweet Beep. It works like Google Alerts. You type in words or phrases you want to be notified of being used in people’s Tweets. I might have a Twitter Beep with my name, so I know when people are talking about me. Or, I might have one set up for ‘copywriting’ so I can be notified if someone is looking for copywriting services, or if there’s someone cool Tweeting about it so I can follow them.

To learn more about this really fabulous networking site check out the <a href="http://www.twitterhandbook.com"title="Twitter Handbook" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.twitterhandbook.com');">Twitter Handbook.

Phew. That’s enough about Twitter for now. But I could go on and on….

It’s been a long time since I had a good blog rant…today might be the day.

(I want to preface this by saying that I do not intend to offend any East Labobians. As far as I know, East Labobia is a fictional country.)

I remember when I was a kid, I loved reading Archie comics. It’s as clear to me as if it were yesterday, summer days sitting under a tree reading about Archie’s twisted love triangle. It was then that I learned it sucks to live in Canada when you want to order stuff from magazines or books.

All the little giveaways and freebies throughout the comics were so cool but “Not available in Canada”. Hmph. No Sea Monkeys for me. It was like this big huge celebration if I ever found something that I could order that would be shipped to the Great White North. (Keep in mind here that I’m not 30 yet, this wasn’t the 1800s or anything when it probably would have been easier to get stuff across the border cause I don’t think there was a Customs thing back then. Or a border? Anyway, I digress.)

If you live in Canada (or Hawaii cause that state seems to be excluded from everything that Canada’s excluded from in my experiences) you’ve probably had this frustration tons of times yourself. Old Navy - great stuff on their website! There’s a store ten minutes from me. They have these great online deals all the time, but only within the US. That’s fine I guess. It’s retail. I’ve grown to expect that type of thing.

Here’s what I don’t get - how is it possible that web based stuff limits Canadians? Hello! It’s the Internet. Why does it matter where my IP address is?

I looked into Google Checkout or something or other a month or so ago because a client mentioned they would prefer to pay that way. I’m all about making it easy for people to pay so I looked into it. I couldn’t find a drop down option for Canada. There was the US and the UK, I believe. Funny, I bet if I wanted an AdWords account there wouldn’t be a problem taking my Canadian money.

Then there’s Basecamp. My online collaboration tool of choice. I recommend to everyone. But when I looked into signing up as an affiliate there was nothing there for Canadians. Funny again. They are really accommodating when it comes to taking a couple hundred dollars each month from me even though I’m in Canada but I can’t make some extra money by recommending it to people? Hmmm.

Let’s see…oh yes. Ring Central. The company I use for my Virtual PBX needs (fancy term for telephone system with extensions and stuff.) I had to update my credit card information and their interface doesn’t include the proper fields for a Canadian address. I had to pick up the phone and wait for a representative.

See a pattern here? These places don’t mind doing business with Canadians for certain things, but it seems like there’s a bit of laziness or some huge oversights there.

One time I was creating an online flyer for a real estate agent and the site allowed me to create a flyer for a Canadian address, but they didn’t have Newfoundland on the dropdown list. A whole province was missing. I had to call to see if they could add it and then they put the wrong provincial abbreviation on there and I don’t know if it ever got fixed.

Finally, these final examples boggle my mind the most.

I would love to have the option to watch Grey’s Anatomy or Desperate Housewives (my favoritest shows) online if I were to miss them (don’t know if Canadians can get Tivo yet) but even though we get the big US networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, etc., when I go to the ABC website to watch my shows, it says that I can’t cause I’m in Canada.

The other day I went to check out Pandora which is supposedly the coolest online music thing ever, to see what it’s all about. I wish I could tell you, but oh wait. Since my IP address is in Canada I don’t have the option of getting past the “So sorry, we value your business” crap to see what it’s all about.

Wasn’t there some Free Trade agreement or something signed between the US and Canada? What’s all this about? Really. Everyone buys stuff online - we’re living in a Global Economy. Why do these American companies feel like it’s okay (or smart?) to rule out an entire country and a neighboring-closest-ally country at that!?

Anyway, I’m almost finished of my coffee now and I’m all riled up. Any Canadians who feel my pain? Can you think of other examples?

To my US friends, did you know that we Canadians are living with these frustrations? Have you ever tried to send away for something or sign up for something only to learn it was not available in the US? I really doubt it, but would love to hear if it’s ever happened.

PS: Dear Old Navy, Google, Basecamp, Ring Central, Pandora and ABC.com, I purposely did not include links back to your sites because I don’t believe that Canadians really exist to you people unless they are directly sending you money. So there!

(There, that oghta show ‘em how darn mad I am. )

My regular readers know that I like to decorate my website with the seasons and for the entire month of October we’re going pink to help raise breast cancer awareness.

A portion of all Mann Made Time’s profits for the month of October will go towards finding a cure.

No matter what your age, girls, start checking yourselves for lumps. I’ve heard of far too many women in their 30s or younger who have been devastated by this disease. And hopefully those of you who need regular mammograms are scheduling those now.

Canadians wishing to donate directly can visit the <a href="http://www.cbcf.org"title="CBCF" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.cbcf.org');">Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Those south of the border may wish to visit the <a href="http://www.komen.org"title="Komen" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker ('/outbound/article/www.komen.org');">Susah G. Komen for the Cure website to donate.

We can’t all give to every foundation that needs to raise funds, but breast cancer is an epidemic. I think it’s good karma to give. It has touched so many people that I know. I encourage everyone reading this to do what you can to help find a cure.

This might not have much to do with entrepreneurship, but it’s a technological time saver so that makes it worth blogging about!

Anyone who regularly reads my blog knows I’m a huge fan of the Food Network and I absolutely love cooking. Unfortunately, my days are pretty busy now with a young family and a thriving business so I’m all for shortcuts whenever I can find them.

Since I’m pretty sure that if my husband were responsible for the cooking we would all die, I make 100% of our meals. And, I still like to prepare nutritious meals for my husband and daughters so I don’t like to have to rely too much on packaged foods.

That’s why I got pretty excited about this…

I got a ‘tweet’ through Twitter on the weekend which turned me on to a totally cool new Google thing called Cookin’ With Google. You type into the search bar the stuff you have in your fridge and in return you get a bunch of recipes based on what you have on hand.

Bookmark this site if you love to cook!

There are lots of recipe sites out there that allow you to search by ingredient but for those of us who are really <strike>lazy</strike> busy, this saves the steps involved with logging into the recipe site, finding the ingredient search, searching by course, blah blah blah. It’s instant. One step.

“When there aren’t enough hours in the day…” try Cookin’ With Google!

Customer service is SO important to me. In my virtual assistance business, nothing comes before making sure my clients are happy. My goal has and always will be to make each of my clients feel like they are my “one and only”.

However, my business is taken such a large growth spurt that I’ve been struggling with this, and I’ve come to the point where that goal is not always attainable for my “pay as you go” clients. Quite simply, retainer work is pre-scheduled and pre-paid so it takes priority.

I’ve had to make some tough decisions, and I wanted to share these here hoping to inspire some fellow entrepreneurs to take a hard look at what’s important and try to get back to their basic original business goals.

First of all, I’ve steadily been building up my team of Associate VAs for about a year and a half now. I’m now blessed enough to provide only the services I want to provide while outsourcing the rest to my very competent team members. This is a win-win for everyone, because if you’re doing stuff you don’t love, there’s going to be someone who will do a better job of it. My clients - retainer or project - still deserve top quality work and in a lot of cases, that means it will be delegated. It’s a really hard habit to break - doing everything myself as it comes in - but I’m getting much better at it.

Next, I’ve unintentionally strayed away from my original business model quite a lot. Actually, my business looks nothing like it did in my first business plan. I always wanted to only work with regular retainer clients because I believe that I can provide true virtual assistance by partnering with a business owner and working so closely with them that I know their business inside and out. I still want to do this, but in the past couple of years I’ve taken on quite a few project clients and while Mann Made Time will still be taking on projects, I am going to be assigning those to my Associates unless it’s something I really want to do. This allows me to focus more time on my retainer clients.

These ongoing clients get presents. They get to make a request to have a project completed on the weekend (not that I can guarantee it will happen and it will be at a premium rate, but still!). They never hear about my other clients. They never know if I can’t get to one of their projects because I am working on other client stuff. They will never hear me vent about the amount of time another clients’ projects are taking. I want to maintain this, so rather than taking on everything that my small business banker might like me to, I’m being very careful about not taking on any more than I can handle while still maintaining the level of client care that is so important to me.

Finally, I have had to let some clients go who take up too much time with last minute requests and too much of my energy with projects that I don’t love. As of right now, if I’m getting paid to do something, it’s something I love.

All of these things allow me to continue to make my clients feel like they’re being well taken care of, and no matter how much bigger Mann Made Time gets, I don’t ever want that to change.

How are you doing with your client care? How are you? Are you bogged down? Outsource!

Hello world! I’m coming up for air in between projects to revisit my lonely old blog. I’ve been so busy ghostwriting other blogs (along with my other client work) that my own has been somewhat neglected. Sorry blog.

It feels like my business is running in absolute tip-top shape so I’ve decided to start taking some time out for myself whenever I can. That meant I had to take some time to reevaluate the services I offer, the work I outsource, and how to get everything to where I need it to be to not be working 18 hour days. I set some goals that involved spending more time playing with my ankle-biters, making my marriage a higher priority (actually, just getting it back on the priority list was a start!) and getting my butt back to the gym.

Done, done and done!

I am absolutely blessed to have the clients I do. Each and every person that I do work for on a daily basis is a joy to have in my life. My team is fabulous as well - I wouldn’t trust my treasured clients to just anyone!

If you’re self employed and are feeling like your life has gotten away from you, please slow down and evaluate the situation. Nobody is going to give you a medal for getting burnt out cause you’re doing too much.

There are so many things you can do to get closer to the ultimate life/work balance. I haven’t found the ultimate yet, but I’m on my way.

Mann Made Time is rolling out a new service in October to help the self-employed free up even more time - Telephone Services.

Yes, we are willing to (wait for it…)

Mann your phones!

This super hard to find service is now available via your Mann Made Receptionist. Our virtual telephone services will include incoming and outgoing calls and I expect the incoming spaces are going to fill up quickly, so consider this fair warning!

Now, there. I’m officially back. Blogging for my business is going to be one of my non-negotiable tasks in my Basecamp account. Really, if I were my own client (which I am) I would have fired me for making my blog a non-priority.

That’s it for this first post after such a long break.

Baby steps.

A food and beverage server (is that the politically correct term?) has a tough job. I worked as a waitress for years when I was going to school, and I loved it, but it was hard work. I learned a lot from my career as a waitress that I think has contributed to my operating a service-based (virtual assistance) business. I thought it would make for an interesting blog post.

So here it goes…

The Top 10 Reasons a Waiter/Waitress Will Make a Good Business Owner

10. Every good server knows they have to know the menu inside and out. You don’t want to work with a business owner who doesn’t know their service/product list like the back of their hand!

9. A server learns how to sell the daily special and get their customers to order dessert - but a good server knows how to do this subtly. A business owner who has been a server knows how to sell their services/product without shoving the cheesecake of the day down your throat, so to speak.

8. A good server knows they should treat all customers as if they were VIPs. All customers are VIPs in the restaurant that is your business. It doesn’t matter if you own a Fortune 500 company, or operate a start up from your basement. A business owner that was a server will (hopefully) treat you with the same respect.

7. Servers who know how to get the best tips know they have to treat children well, either by giving them coloring sheets or bringing out their meals right away. (This also lets the parents enjoy their food while it’s hot.) A business owner that goes out of their way to send gifts to your children at Christmas time may have been a waiter or waitress in a past life.

6. A server knows how to work as part of a team. The dishwasher, the busser, the cook, the bartender and the servers would never get anywhere if they didn’t work as a team. A waiter/waitress who goes on to start a business will be a valuable asset to any team - including yours.

5. Servers know how to effectively communicate. In a noisy kitchen, you have to get your point across very clearly, and you have to make sure to get orders right. If the kitchen tells you it will be an extra 30 minutes before one of your tables gets their main courses, you learn to tell your customers right away so they at least know what to expect. Servers that end up in business for themselves know how to communicate and will make sure everyone’s kept in the loop to ensure happy clients!

4. A business owner that was a server knows that honesty is the best policy and it doesn’t pay to lie or make excuses. If you forgot to ring in someone’s order and everyone else at their table is already eating, it’s kind of obvious anyway. A business owner with integrity won’t make excuses for mistakes.

3. A good waitress or waiter quickly learns how to anticipate the needs of their customers. If you’re bringing out a steak and fries, you make sure you have the ketchup and steak sauce. If you notice one of your customers is getting low on their drink, you offer a refill. A business owner who has waited tables will learn to anticipate the needs of their clients. For a virtual assistant, this might mean learning a clients’ habits in order to prepare in advance for things so their clients don’t have to ask. People like this; patrons of a restaurant like when they don’t have to ask the waitress for something, and clients of a service provider like when they feel taken care of in this manner.

2. When a business owner who was a server has an disappointed customer, they do what they can to make it right. Whether a customer ordered their steak rare but got it well done, or the appetizers were cold, or if there’s a bone in their soup - a good server asks no questions and simply gets them something else or brings it back to the kitchen to be fixed. As a virtual assistant who used to be a waitress, if a client is disappointed in their completed project it goes back to the kitchen until the end result is exactly what the client wanted. Sometimes there are mis-communications, it happens. But my mission is to “wow” my clients each and every time. It’s my mission. (I learned that as a server at a Delta Hotel, and I’ve never forgotten it!)

1. A server knows they must never, ever let a customer leave unhappy if it’s within their power. S/he will do what it takes to make sure they come back. This might mean comping a dessert or giving away a gift certificate for their next visit. A business owner who has waited tables knows this. It’s second nature. We wouldn’t dream of letting a client walk away unhappy. It will not happen.

Is there anything I missed?!

Every business requires writing. We all need marketing materials, newsletter content, press releases, articles, blog posts, website content and correspondence written. Do you put things off because you don’t feel you can express yourself well enough through prose?

I decided to run a little contest.

If you have started to write something, have a piece you keep revising cause you can’t get it right, or have some notes sitting there waiting patiently for you to turn them into something, I would like to help.

I will take your rough notes or your ‘unpolished’ piece (up to 500 words) and put our words in your voice. This ‘prize’ is valued at approximately $100.

All I ask in return is your permission for me to use the ‘before’ and ‘after’ pieces in some future marketing materials. It can be kept anonymous or I’ll link to your website.

So, the contest is on. Send your piece in the body of an email to blog@mannmadetime.com with the subject line: ‘Mop My Copy’. Please indicate in your message whether you will allow me to use the finished piece and the original in my portfolio.

I’ll take submissions until July 18th. The ‘winner’ will receive his or her polished piece before July 31st.

May the sloppiest copy win

Do you have a pretty picture of yourself on your website? If you’re a professional (which, presumably you are if you’re reading this blog) then I hope it’s a professional shot.

If you have been in business for fifteen years and haven’t updated your photo, whatcha waitin’ for?

I’m one to talk - the only professional headshots I have were taken when I was pregnant and they are not at all flattering. I’ve been meaning to get new ones, but then baby came along, the business boomed and my picture hasn’t been high on my priority list.

Wow…was it really December 2006 when I got those photos taken? Holy cow, time flies.

I need a new photo, and if your professional headshot is ten years old or cropped from a wedding picture, I want to challenge you to get a new one with me.

I could go into detail about why a professional photo is a must, but I don’t think there’s much need. If you have a bad photo, you probably know it’s bad, you’re just putting off getting a good one because of cost, lack of time, or maybe you don’t think your photo is really “that” bad. Here’s a tip to help you figure out if your picture is good or not. If you are constantly meeting with people who say they didn’t recognize you from your photo, it’s probably time to update it

As human beings, many of us make very quick judgments about people and if you have a family photo of yourself on your website (and you’re operating a professional business), you’re going to be judged…depending on your target market, I suppose. If you have a photo of yourself with your children and you operate a children’s clothing store or a day care, that’s quite acceptable. But if you’re an accountant and you have a photo on your website of yourself with your children, that’s a different story all together!

So…here’s the challenge.

If your professional headshot <strike>sucks</strike> isn’t great, just book an appointment with a photographer, or at Wal-Mart, and get a new one taken. I’m going to get in touch with my favorite photographer and try to get a new photo taken by the end of the month.

Who’s with me?
